|John W. Chambers, 86, of Rockport, husband of the late Anna (Smith) Chambers, died on Sunday evening, June 26 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. Mr. Chambers was a former longtime resident of Tenants Harbor and Rockland, Maine.He was born in Dedham on May 11, 1912, to the late Walter W. and Elizabeth (Smith) Chambers. His father had graduated from Northeastern University’s first law school class in the early 1900s.
Mr. Chambers was a graduate of Dedham High School and a graduate of Boston University, where he earned his bachelors and masters degree in music.
He was an organist for many churches in the New England area and also played at Hammond Castle and the Seaman’s Church Institute in New York.
Mr. Chambers had served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, attaining the rank of chief warrant officer. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a former member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club.
Mr. Chambers and his wife were avid travelers.
He is survived by his brother, William H., husband of Dorothea Chambers, of Lebanon, Maine; nephews, William H., husband of Ida M. Chambers, of Rockport, James W. Chambers of Rockport, Paul F., husband of Joan Chambers, of Westwood, John W., husband of Katherine Chambers, of Medfield; a niece, Elizabeth, wife of Peter Laisen, of Lebanon, Maine; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
