Half Staff – J. Albert Burgoyne

J. Albert Burgoyne, 84, husband for 58 years of Juliet Moran Burgoyne, of Rockport, died at his residence on Sunday, Jan. 17.He was born in Malden on May 4, 1914, to the late Albert M. and Anna (Bagley) Burgoyne.

Mr. Burgoyne received his diploma with high honors from St. John’s Dominican High School in Cambridge, graduated cum laude from Boston College in 1936, was an honor graduate of Georgetown University Law School where he was awarded the coveted Scholarship of Merit and was a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Business AMP Program.

He was admitted to practice before the Bar of Massachusetts and to the Bar of the District of Columbia of Washington, D.C., and the United States Supreme Court and was a member of the Delta Theta Law Fraternity.

Mr. Burgoyne joined Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., underwriting, in 1936, moved along to the Law Department as counsel, vice president of Liberty Mutual and Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Co.’s. He became vice president, underwriting, of State Farm Insurance Co., then vice president of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. where he organized, developed and became first president and chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Metropolitan Property and Liability Insurance Co. in Warwick, R.I.

After a long and distinguished career in insurance, a member of many insurance organizations, Mr. Burgoyne was given the Testimonial Award, Board of Directors, of the American Alliance of Insurers.

He served in Naval Communications Intelligence as a lieutenant during World War 11.

In 1979, he went on to serve, of counsel, to Coombs and Ryan, Attorneys-at-Law, and became founder and principal of Granite Consulting Services in insurance management.

He also served for 10 years as a member of the faculty of Boston College Law School as a lecturer in insurance law.

Mr. Burgoyne was a member of the board of directors of the Granite Savings Bank, and board of the Rockport Art Association, board of the Thacher Island Committee, chairman of the Insurance Committee of the town of Rockport for 10 years, a member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, and served as a special minister of the Eucharist at St. Joachim’s Church in Rockport.

Central to his life was Mr. Burgoyne’s devotion to Boston College. He was a charter member of the Fides Society, charter member of the Shaw Society, founding member of the Boston College Club, and for many years, a member of the President’s Circle.

Mr. Burgoyne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juliet Moran Burgoyne of Rockport; two sons, J. Albert Burgoyne Jr. and his wife Diane of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Robert F. Burgoyne and his wife, Mari-Ann, of Wrentham; three grandchildren, Marissa, Abby and Daniel; five sisters, Loretta Doyle of Rye, NH, Anna Quigley of Medford, Eleanor Callan of Chelmsford, Mildred Smith of Hudson, NH, and Jeanne Soviak of Livonia, MN; a brother, Carl Burgoyne of Livonia, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Tracy and Ruth Ferraioli; and a brother, General William Burgoyne, U.S. Army.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joachim’s Church, Broadway, Rockport at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Stoneham.
