|Gloucester, MA — Shirley Ann (Tate) Dean, 84, of Gloucester, passed away in Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington, Mass. on Wednesday morning, Aug. 13, 2014. She was born in Salem, Mass. on March 20, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Lawson Franklin and Gertrude (Hoyt) Tate. Shirley grew up on Rocky Neck. After graduation from Gloucester High School, she furthered her education at Bridgewater State College. When her former husband, Jay, was in the service they lived in Tripoli, Libya. Shirley became a Physical Education teacher. There she taught for a few years in schools in Portland, where she lived for numerous years. She loved the ocean and was an avid sailor, belonging to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and also enjoyed playing tennis as a member of the Manchester Athletic Club. She loved traveling and had visited five continents. She will be missed.She is survived by her three sons, Robert Dean and his wife, Judy of Rockport, Timothy Dean and his wife, Nancy of Portland, Maine, David Dean of North Hollywood, Calif.; three grandchildren, Robert Dean and his wife, Marianne of Rockport, Taylor and Thomas Dean of Portland, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Peighton Dean; her sister, Elaine DelTorchio of Gloucester and her children, Skip, Sandy, Steve, Leigh and Terry; a special cousin, Holly Steiss of Beverly and her many special friends, as well as her beloved cat, “Mishka.” She is also survived by many friends and extended family.
She was predeceased by her brother, Harley Tate.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her burial will be held privately.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home will be held on Friday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m.
