|John William Keefe, 80, husband of Eileen P. (Pitts ) Keefe of 49 Main St., Rockport, and formerly of Braintree and Andover, died on Saturday evening at the Addison Gilbert Hospital.He was born in Boston on March 4,1916, to the late Frank and Mary (Roberts) Keefe,
Mr. Keefe was a graduate of Boston College, class of 1937. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant and was the communications officer aboard the destroyer escort the “John J. Powers.”
He was the assistant director of the Claims department of the John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Boston, where he worked for more than 30 years, retiring in 1971.
He was a member of the John Hancock Quarter-Century Club, the John Hancock Executives Retirement Club and the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, where he was an avid sailor. He has been a resident of Rockport since 1980.
Mr. Keefe is survived by his wife, Eileen, to whom he was married for more than 55 years; a son, John W. Keefe Jr., husband of Janet Butera Keefe of New York City; two daughters, Jane K., wife of Mark E. Tully and Nancy K., wife of Edward R. Carbonneau, both of Andover; six grandchildren, Daniella B. and Sean B. Keefe, both of New York City, Sari J. and Kaitlin E. Tully, both of Andover, Alana J. Hennessey of Amherst and Paul C. Hennessey Jr. of Andover; two brothers; Harry Keefe of Wellesley and Leo Keefe of Middletown, R.I.; three sisters, Peggy Coyne of Burlingame, Calif., Dorothy Stone of Clearwater, Fla., and Betty Burke of Marshfield; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Keefe; and also by a sister, Mary Grady.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, at 9:15 a.m., from the Burgess and Mackey Funeral Home, 177 Main St., Rockport.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Joachim’s Church. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
