|John M. “Jack” Goddard, 82, husband of Janet S. (Smith) Goddard, of Rockport, died on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.Born in Newport, R.I. on Sept. 9, 1924, son of the late George and Laura (Radford) Goddard.
Jack was raised in Belmont and attended Tabor Academy in Marion, later going on to Holy Cross College.
He joined the U.S. Navy and had served during World War II. After being discharged from the service, he attended Bowdoin College. Upon graduating, he went to work for his father running Boston Blue Print Co. Inc. in Boston, where he went on to become owner and operator.
In 1947, he married his first wife, Joyce Marsh. After her death in 1974, he married Janet S. Norton.
Jack was an avid Star boat sailor. He participated in races all over the country, winning prestigious trophies. He sold his Star boat “Tackless” in 1977 and bought a Grand Banks “Penguin”, where he enjoyed spending his time.
He was a member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club for many years. He was an avid sailor, teaching adult sailing during the summer months. He served numerous terms on the Board of Governors at the Sandy Bay Yacht Club as well as serving as Commodore many times.
In addition to his wife Janet, he is survived by his son, Geoffrey Goddard and wife Barbara of Rockport; his daughter, Lynn Goddard of Magnolia; grandchildren, Jennifer Neves and husband Scott, Laura Haight and husband Toby of Gloucester, Benjamin Goddard of Ipswich, Timothy Goddard of Rockport, Megan Goddard of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Neves, Taylor Neves and Bryant Haight of Gloucester; step-children, Frederick “Chip” Norton and his wife Hope, Debra Sullivan and husband Brian, Len Johnson of Nashua, N.H.; step-grandchildren, Julia and Grace Norton of Rockport and Corey Norton of Washington. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce and step-daughter, Wendy Johnson.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St., Rockport, on Friday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
