Half Staff – Elizabeth C. (Cruickshank) Olson

Elizabeth C. (Cruickshank) Olson, 86, wife of Melvin A. Olson, of 3 Gap Head Road, Rockport, died on Sunday evening, October 6, at the Seacoast Nursing & Retirement Center following an extended illness.She was born in Manchester-by-the-Sea, on March 31, 1916, daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (McKinley) Cruickshank.

Mrs. Olson was a graduate of Story High School, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Burdett College in Lynn.

She was employed as a secretary in Boston firms, and during World War II, she did war production work for CBS Hytron in Newburyport. In 1961, she assisted in the founding of M.A. Olson Co. Inc. and served as a corporate secretary and treasurer in her husband’s firm, in the field of equipment engineering and sales. She retired in 1978 with her husband and enjoyed traveling extensively in the U.S. and abroad and wintering in Naples, Florida.

Mrs. Olson was active in Girl Scouts and held responsible positions of service with the First Congregational Church, where she was a member for 40 years. She also belonged to the Rockport Art Association, the Sandy Bay Yacht Club and the Addison Gilbert Hospital Auxiliary Service.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Melvin A. Olson of Rockport; a daughter, Sigrid E. Lindo and her husband Stephen T. of Montclair, N.J.; a son, Peter B. Olson of Wahkon, Minnesota; two grandson, Alexander and Samuel Lindo; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Warren and Bettina Olson of Greenville, S.C. and The Rev. Roy Olson of Skokie, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Olson was pre-deceased by a brother, Alexander Cruickshank; and two sisters, Florence Cruickshank and Margaret Matheson.

A memorial service will be held in the First Congregational Church, corner of Main and School Streets, Rockport, on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her memory to the First Congregational Church, General Building Fund, 12 School St., Rockport, MA 01966.
