|Damon Carter, 84, of New London, NH, died unexpectedly July 19, 2004, at New London Hospital. He was the son of William Joseph and Ruth (Damon) Carter of Newton and Rockport.Mr. Carter graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1938 and from Princeton University in 1942. A resident of Newton and a summer resident of Rockport for much of his life, Mr. Carter had worked in Boston advertising for over 35 years retiring as vice president of Humphrey Browning MacDougall in 1982.
An avid skier, sailor and tennis player, he was active in the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and the Waban Neighborhood Club in Newton.
Upon retirement, Mr. Carter moved to Warner, NH. He was in the Warner Men’s Club, a member of the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club and active in the development of local affordable housing. His many friendships and role as secretary for the Princeton Class of 1942 gave him pleasure throughout his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Ann (Walen) Carter of New London, NH, his daughters, Janet and her, husband, Jay Lingerman of Ipswich and Elizabeth (Betsy) and her husband, Ira Lavine, of Rockport; his sons, Damon Jr. “Jay” and his wife Judy, of Needham, and Steven P. of Somerville; his granddaughters, Beth Miller of Wenham, Lindsey Miller of San Francisco, California, and Amelia Carter of Somerville; his sisters, Kay Shumway and her husband Peter, of Etna, NH and Nancy Wheeler of Santa Fe, NM; six nieces, seven nephews; and three stepchildren and their families.
He was also the husband for 49 years of the late Ann Brittain Carter.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
